Can you think of information transmission without thinking of electromagnetic wave propagation? (Forget of acoustic wave propagation) All wireless information transmission involves transmission of photons. In the high intensity limit, it is a continuous beam & in the low intensity limit it is in the form of discrete particles referred to as photons. When we are talking on cell phones, acoustic (pressure) variations are converted to electric variations & that in turn is converted to electromagnetic wave using various kinds of modulation techniques like amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, pulse modulation, phase modulation, etc. Even information transmission through landlines is by electromagnetic waves & not by flowing charges as some might think. Drift velocity of electrons are far too less to carry information across thousands of miles within seconds. Information is propagated through wires at nearly the speed of light (less due to dispersion).
